The Irish Coast Guard has teamed up with Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI to send an important message to holiday merrymakers: enjoy the water, but put safety first this Christmas season.
As thousands prepare to take their traditional Christmas Day plunge or enjoy coastal walks, safety officials are reminding the public to take essential precautions. With many expected to brave the chilly waters on Christmas morning, and countless others planning festive seaside strolls, authorities are highlighting the importance of proper preparation.
“We want everyone to enjoy themselves while staying safe,” says Clare McGrath, Water Safety Ireland’s Chair. She emphasizes the importance of basic safety measures, including checking weather conditions and informing others of your plans.
For swimmers, the guidance is straightforward: check weather and tide conditions, wear bright clothing for visibility, never swim alone, and maintain body warmth before and after entering the water. Coastal walkers are advised to keep a safe distance from stormy seas and cliff edges, watch for slippery conditions, and carry a fully charged phone.
The timing of this advisory is crucial, as winter conditions can create additional risks for water activities. Tide variations can catch people off guard, making it essential to check tide tables to avoid getting stranded.
Despite the holiday season, all three safety organizations – the Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland, and RNLI – will maintain their round-the-clock emergency response services throughout the Christmas period, ensuring help is available if needed.
According to The Journal, these precautions are particularly important during the festive season when many people are drawn to traditional holiday activities along Ireland’s coastline.
