New transparency rules mandate detailed receipts showing dispensing fees and professional service charges

Irish pharmacies must clearly display the cost of all professional services beginning December 1st, with detailed itemized receipts becoming mandatory from January, under new guidance from the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.
The regulations require pharmacies to post pricing information in a “conspicuous location that is visible to patients,” ensuring transparency about fees before transactions occur. From next year, all patients will receive detailed receipts breaking down medicine dispensing fees and any additional professional service costs.
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill welcomed the move, describing it as strengthening trust in community pharmacies, which she called “among the most trusted and accessible healthcare professionals.” She emphasized that patients deserve visibility into the fees they pay when purchasing prescription medicines.
“This will help people better understand exactly what they’re paying for their medication and associated services,” Carroll MacNeill said, thanking the PSI for developing the guidance.
PSI Registrar Joanne Kissane stressed that while the regulator doesn’t set pharmacy prices, patients have a fundamental right to transparent and accurate pricing information. “Access to pricing information is essential to empower individuals to make informed healthcare decisions,” she stated.
Kissane added that transparency in fees and pricing maintains public confidence in pharmacists and enables patients to make informed decisions about their health and treatment. The new guidance aims to provide patients with improved understanding of costs for products and services they use in pharmacies.
