Today, Irish President Michael D. Higgins will be bestowed with an honorary doctorate from the esteemed University of Manchester, UK. The honor, a Doctorate of Letters honoris causa, recognizes President Higgins’ remarkable contributions to literature and public life. University Chancellor Nazir Afzal will confer the honor upon President Higgins at the ceremony.
President Higgins embarked for Manchester earlier this morning to partake in the event. Alongside the honorary doctorate, he will deliver the inaugural lecture in the John Kennedy lecture series, a significant addition to the university’s curriculum for the next five years.
This isn’t President Higgins’ only accolade this year. In June, he is scheduled to receive the Agricola Medal from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, further underscoring his impactful presence on the global stage.
