Junior Housing Minister calls for increase in rent tax credit in upcoming Irish Budget

Ireland’s junior Housing Minister Alan Dillon has advocated for an increase in the rent tax credit in the forthcoming budget.

“I believe the tax credit should be increased further in the forthcoming budger as a means to continue to support renters and parents of student renters,” Dillon was quoted as saying by breakingnews.ie.

He also urged those who have not yet claimed their tax credit to do so through Revenue.ie, while highlighting that data indicates that thousands of tenants have not yet taken advantage of the rent tax credit.

Dillon, the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, said thousands of renters are still eligible for the €750 rental tax credit, or €1,500 for couples, which aims to alleviate monthly rent burdens.

He noted that the rent tax credit, introduced by Fine Gael, has already been claimed by over 360,000 people in the past two years.

The rent tax credit is also available to parents who pay for their children’s accommodation in rented rooms or digs, providing additional financial relief to families.
