Kellie Harrington successfully defended her Olympic lightweight (60kg) title, claiming gold in Paris.
Harrington triumphed over China’s Yang Wenlu at Stade Roland Garros, securing her place in history as the first Irish boxer to defend an Olympic title. On her path to victory, she defeated her Tokyo 2020 final opponent, Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira, in the semi-final.
According to The journal, The title bout ended in a split decision, cementing Harrington’s status as a double Olympic champion.
Taoiseach Simon Harris congratulated Harrington, praising her not only for her victory but also for her exemplary conduct and representation of Ireland.
“Kellie has inspired us all, young and old,” Harris stated. “We are proud of you for becoming a double Olympic champion and for how you carry yourself as a person.”
Dublin’s North Inner City celebrated Harrington’s victory with a live screening at Diamond Park, hosted by the North East Inner City Initiative and Dublin City Council.
