Laya Healthcare announces 4.5% average premium increase from October

Laya Healthcare will increase health insurance premiums by an average of 4.5% from October 1st, while retiring 10 existing plans and introducing three new options as part of a comprehensive product review.

The price increases will affect customers renewing policies on or after October 1st, though those mid-contract will not see changes until their renewal date. Despite the overall increase, some plans will experience price reductions, including adult and child rates for the “Signify” and “Core Connect” plans.

The Health Insurance Authority described the price increases as “unwelcome, particularly during a time of rising living costs,” while acknowledging that insurers set prices based on commercial factors including medical inflation and claims costs. The HIA emphasized that “affordability must remain a priority” and encouraged consumers to shop around for the best value.

Customers with plans being retired will be automatically moved to equivalent replacement plans at renewal, with direct contact and alternative options provided. Under legislation, replacement plans must offer the same benefits with only limited variation permitted, and consumers are not required to accept the proposed replacement.

Laya Managing Director D.O. O’Connor justified the changes as necessary to meet “evolving healthcare needs,” citing rising global healthcare costs. “Demand for health services is at an all-time high, particularly in private and hi-tech hospital settings where we’re seeing a 14.8% increase in 2025 claim costs when compared to last year,” he said.

O’Connor attributed cost pressures to advances in medical technology and new therapies, stating the product review aims to balance “fast access to healthcare while safeguarding affordability of cover.”

The changes coincide with Irish Life Health retiring 22 plans from September 1st, highlighting industry-wide adjustments. The HIA offers free comparison tools and independent advice through its website and helpline to help consumers navigate the changes.
