Leo Varadkar has officially resigned from his position as Prime Minister of Ireland, marking the end of his four-year tenure. Varadkar submitted his resignation on Monday at 5:55 pm local time at the official residence of President Michael D. Higgins. Following the submission of his resignation letter to the President’s Secretary General, Varadkar returned around 6:40 pm.
In his announcement, Varadkar expressed no regrets about his decision and stated that he is eager to embark on a new chapter. The 45-year-old had previously disclosed his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Fine Gael party three weeks ago.
Varadkar will continue to serve as caretaker Prime Minister until the next session of Parliament, during which Simon Harris is expected to be elected as the new Prime Minister.
Varadkar’s resignation marks the conclusion of his leadership, during which he navigated significant challenges and led the country through various issues. As Ireland prepares for a transition in leadership, all eyes are on the forthcoming parliamentary session to witness the appointment of the new Prime Minister.
