A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after 87-year-old grandfather Thomas O’Halloran was fatally stabbed on a mobility scooter in west London.
The 44-year-old was arrested at an address in Southall, west London, in the early hours of Thursday, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.
According to the police, Mr. O’Halloran was attacked in the public on Tuesday at approximately 4 p.m. on Western Avenue in Greenford.
He managed to travel 75 yards on his scooter before seeking help from a member of the public.
Paramedics attempted to save the pensioner, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers said Mr O’Halloran was a “very well known and a much-loved member” of the community and was known for playing the accordion outside his local supermarket to raise money.
Footage on social media shows the pensioner busking to raise money for Ukraine in the months before his death.
Yesterday, police released an image of a man they were seeking to identify in relation to the attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim Eastwood leading the investigation said: “I would like to thank the public for their overwhelming support following this horrific incident.
“As a result of the release of a CCTV image yesterday, an arrest has been made and this investigation is progressing at pace.
“Mr O’Halloran’s family have been updated with this development and continues to be supported by specially trained officers.”
The pensioner was originally from Ennistymon, Co Clare, in the west of Ireland.
