Medicine shortages leave Irish patients in limbo, pharmacists raise alarm

According to The Irish Examiner, patients across Ireland are struggling to access vital medications as pharmacies face widespread shortages of essential drugs. The crisis affects treatments for multiple conditions, leaving many in a frustrating cycle between their doctors and pharmacies.

Local pharmacists report significant shortages of medications used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with patients often unable to fill their prescriptions. The shortage extends to crucial diabetes treatments, including the popular drug Ozempic, as well as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patches used to manage menopause symptoms.

Pain relief medications containing fentanyl are also affected, causing concern for patients who rely on these treatments for chronic pain management. The situation is particularly challenging for those requiring psychiatric medications, as consistent treatment is essential for mental health management.

A practicing pharmacist highlighted how patients are caught in a difficult loop, moving between healthcare providers and pharmacies in search of their prescribed medications. This ongoing shortage is putting additional strain on both healthcare providers and patients, who must spend extra time and effort securing their necessary treatments.
