Mumbai traffic police get WhatsApp messages threatening ’26/11-type’ attack

The Mumbai Police received a threat message from a number on Friday night, warning of a terrorist attack similar to the one that occurred in Mumbai on November 26.

According to officials, the texts that were sent to the helpline number for the Mumbai traffic police came from a Pakistani number. The message warned that an assault will soon be carried out in Mumbai to revive memories of the terrorist strikes on 26/11 in 2008, The Indian Express reported.

“Text messages were received on the WhatsApp number of the Mumbai police’s traffic helpline operated from the control room located at Worli in central Mumbai around 11 pm on Friday,” the official said.

All agencies, including Mumbai police, its Crime Branch wing, and Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, are investigating the case.

“We are probing the origin of the threat messages. We will soon trace the sender. We are also taking all necessary precautions in the city in view of the threat message,” said a police officer.

In one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in the country’s history, 166 people were killed and over 300 injured as 10 heavily-armed terrorists from Pakistan created mayhem in Mumbai on November 26, 2008.
