New Irish streaming service launches to rival Netflix with homegrown talent

A new streaming platform showcasing Irish films and documentaries has launched, featuring work from acclaimed actors Barry Keoghan and Ruth Negga, with ambitions to bring local content to a global audience.

Eiretainment.com, created by Dublin director and producer Simon Maguire, aims to provide a dedicated space for independent Irish filmmakers while offering viewers access to unique Irish content for €6 monthly.

“We’re not really competing with the Netflix’s of this world, nor do we want to,” Maguire told The Irish Examiner. “This is a subscription platform which focuses purely on Irish-made films and documentaries.”

The platform, currently available in Ireland and the UK, plans to expand across the EU and US in coming months. Annual subscriptions are available at €60, offering two months free, with no long-term contract required.

Maguire emphasized the platform’s commitment to representing voices from across Ireland, not just Dublin. “It’s very important to me that I get other voices from around the country involved,” he said.

Film in Limerick’s regional manager Paul C Ryan praised the initiative: “The Irish film industry has become a global force in recent years. It’s wonderful to see new platforms like Eiretainment shining a light on Irish film talent and the next generation of filmmakers from across the country.”

According to The Irish Examiner, the platform, which received support from Dublin City Council’s local enterprise office, plans to feature online premieres in the coming weeks, including a horror film release for Halloween.

Subscribers can access the service through the website or by downloading the app, with their subscription directly supporting the Irish film industry.
