New speed camera in Carlow goes live this Friday

A new static speed camera will become operational on the N80 in Co Carlow between Barristown and Levitstown starting at midday this Friday, May 23.

The installation brings the total number of operational static speed cameras across Ireland to seven, with others already functioning on the N17 in Mayo, N59 in Galway, N13 in Donegal, N69 in Limerick, R772 in Wexford and the N22 in Cork.

Motorists caught exceeding the speed limit will face a €160 fixed charge notice and three penalty points on their license.

In addition to these fixed cameras, Ireland’s road safety monitoring system includes 58 GoSafe mobile safety cameras operating across 1,500 locations, garda-operated safety cameras, and five Average Safety Cameras in the Dublin Port Tunnel and on the M7, N3 Cavan, N5 Mayo and N2 Meath.

The first quarter of 2025 saw 6,073 Fixed Charge Notices issued to speeding motorists nationwide. The N17 camera in Mayo generated the highest number at 2,385 notices after resolving earlier technical issues.

That same Mayo camera had previously been the subject of controversy when almost 1,900 fixed charge notices issued between December 2024 and February 2025 were revoked due to an “error” with the system. The camera had also been temporarily out of service between January 1-17, 2025 following an act of vandalism before being recertified and restored to operation on February 14.

The N13 camera in Donegal and the M7 average speed camera were also significant contributors to enforcement figures, generating 1,581 and 1,004 fixed charge notices respectively.
