An Garda Síochána have warned the public about a new WhatsApp-based scam circulating in Ireland, urging users to stay alert.

The scam begins with a message that appears to come from a friend or known contact. The sender claims that your phone number was mistakenly used to register on WhatsApp and asks you to share a verification code if one arrives. Shortly after, WhatsApp sends a login code to your phone.
If this code is shared, scammers use it to log into WhatsApp on another device, gaining full control of your account. Once inside, they message your contacts, often urgently asking for money. Many victims only realise what has happened when friends later contact them, by which time payments may already have been made.
Gardaí say this scam relies on trust and speed, pressuring people to act before they think. They are reminding users that WhatsApp will never ask you to share a verification code with anyone.
How to protect yourself
-
Never share WhatsApp verification codes, even with friends or family
-
Enable two-step or multi-factor authentication on WhatsApp
-
Be cautious of unexpected messages or calls, especially those creating urgency
-
If you believe your account has been compromised, contact Gardaí immediately and secure your account
Authorities say staying informed and cautious is the best defence against this growing scam.
