Over 400,000 households to receive fuel allowance payments starting this week

Over 400,000 households across Ireland are set to receive fuel allowance starting this week that will benefit them throughout the winter months.

The allowance is a means-assessed payment designed to assist with the cost of heating homes during the colder part of the year.

Eligible recipients include those aged 70 and older or individuals receiving long-term social welfare payments who meet specific means test criteria.

The allowance helps vulnerable groups manage rising energy costs as temperatures drop.

The total allowance is €924, distributed over a 28-week period. Recipients can choose between weekly payments of €33 or two lump sum payments of €462 each, depending on their preference.

Weekly payments will be made from the end of September until April. Alternatively, households can opt for two instalments, with the first paid in September and the second in January.

Only one allowance is provided per household. This year’s scheme has been expanded following changes announced in the last Budget.
