A record-breaking 89 Irish beaches and 10 marinas have received prestigious Blue Flag status for the 2025 bathing season, according to environmental organization An Taisce. The new total surpasses the previous record of 85 beaches, reflecting improved coastal management across the country.

County Kerry leads with 15 Blue Flag designations, followed by Donegal with 14. Several beaches have regained their Blue Flag status after missing out in recent years, including Cappagh Pier in Clare, Céibh an Spidéal in Galway, Ballymoney North beach in Wexford, and both Tramore and Dunmore East in Waterford.
Notably, Keel Beach on Achill Island in Mayo was awarded a Blue Flag for the 37th consecutive year, demonstrating remarkable consistency in meeting the program’s strict environmental standards.
The Green Coast Award, which recognizes beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality, and natural beauty, was presented to 70 locations, matching last year’s record total. These awards also acknowledge the thousands of volunteers who participate in community clean-ups through coastal groups.
Ten exceptional locations received both the Blue Flag and Green Coast awards: Fountainstown and Inchydoney East beach in Cork; Balcarrick, Donabate in Fingal; Salthill and Silverstrand beaches in Galway City; Trá Inis Oírr in Galway; Baile an Sceilg in Kerry; Bettystown in Meath; and Enniscrone and Rosses Point beach in Sligo.
Minister for Housing and Heritage James Browne presented the awards at a ceremony held at the Ravenport Resort in Curracloe, County Wexford on Friday. “Great credit must go to local authorities, An Taisce, coastal communities and particularly all those local volunteers who have worked tirelessly around the country,” Browne said.
Cathy Baxter, director of education and community action at An Taisce, highlighted the unprecedented number of sites receiving recognition this year and congratulated all local authorities, marina operators, and Clean Coasts groups for maintaining the excellent standards required for these prestigious designations.
