In a significant data breach, Electric Ireland, the nation’s leading electricity provider, has confirmed that sensitive information belonging to approximately 8,000 customers has been leaked. The breach, attributed to an employee of a third-party company working with Electric Ireland, compromised customers’ names, phone numbers, and dates of birth, as well as bank account details and IBANs.
In response to the potential threat of financial fraud, Electric Ireland has dispatched letters to affected customers, advising them to contact their banks immediately. The company is working closely with law enforcement, with both the Gardaí and the Data Protection Commission launching investigations into the incident.
Electric Ireland, serving approximately 1.1 million customers nationwide, has assured those unaffected that no action is necessary. However, customers suspecting fraudulent activity are urged to contact the company directly for further assistance. The breached data poses a significant risk, emphasizing the need for heightened cybersecurity measures within the energy provider’s operations.
