Six-month Waterford train disruptions begin to address chronic flooding

Waterford train services will face significant weekday morning disruptions over the next six months as Irish Rail begins major flood prevention works designed to tackle recurring flooding that has plagued the line for years.

The extensive engineering project aims to make the railway resilient to climate change impacts and address the persistent flooding issues that have repeatedly disrupted services. Works will affect off-peak rail services on Monday through Thursday mornings from 8am to 2.30pm.

Disruptions commence next Monday, August 25th, and will continue until November 27th. Following a Christmas break, works will resume from January 5th until March 26th, 2026, representing one of the most significant infrastructure projects on the route in recent years.

Passengers face substantial service changes during the construction period. The 7.20am and 10.15am services from Dublin Heuston to Waterford will terminate at Kilkenny, with bus transfers required from Kilkenny to Thomastown and Waterford.

Similarly, the 11am and 1.05pm services from Waterford to Dublin Heuston will require bus transfers from Waterford and Thomastown to Kilkenny before connecting with trains to Heuston. The 9.45pm service from Limerick Junction to Waterford will terminate at Carrick-on-Suir, with bus connections to complete the journey.

Beyond flood prevention measures, the project includes installation of a new electrical signalling system to replace the existing mechanical infrastructure, modernizing operations along the corridor.

While the disruptions will inconvenience passengers, Irish Rail emphasized the long-term benefits of creating a more reliable service less susceptible to weather-related cancellations. The works represent a significant investment in climate resilience as extreme weather events become more frequent and intense.

Passengers are advised to check updated timetables and allow extra travel time during the construction period.
