Six children were among the 16 people who died in Ireland as a result of invasive Strep A since October 2022.
Four of the children who recently died were under the age of ten, and two of them were between the ages of ten and seventeen.
The ten fatalities among adults occurred between the ages of 50 and 96, according to Dublin Live.
In Ireland, there have been more cases of invasive Group A Streptococcus since October; as of February 25, there were 152 cases. 48 of those incidents included kids under the age of nine.
The percentage of cases involving children would have been around 25% prior to the pandemic, but it is now 37%. However, the contagious bacteria’s spread has mostly occurred outside of its typical peak during the first six months of the year.
Studies are being conducted to ascertain whether the rise in cases at the end of 2022 was caused by a particular strain.
Resuming social interactions following the pandemic’s social isolation is likely to play a role as well.
