Surge In Dog Bite Injuries Spurs Calls For National Action On Animal Welfare

In a concerning trend, the number of people requiring hospital treatment for dog bite injuries has surged by 50% since 2012, according to a study published in the Irish Medical Journal. Between 2012 and 2022, 3,158 individuals were admitted for treatment following a dog attack. The majority suffered open wounds, with 24% sustaining facial injuries.

Sinn Fein Councillor for Waterford City and County Council, John Hearne, has highlighted the inadequacy of resources for enforcing responsible dog ownership at the local level. Hearne calls for a comprehensive review of animal welfare practices across Ireland, emphasizing that dog control is not being taken seriously by local authorities. He asserts that the current token provision of wardens is insufficient due to financial constraints, advocating for the establishment of a national body to enforce animal welfare regulations. Hearne proposes the involvement of local guards and Garda barracks to ensure effective enforcement of these vital roles.
