Taoiseach Simon Harris has congratulated Keir Starmer on Labour’s major win in the UK general election, expressing hopes for stronger UK-Ireland relations.
Keir Starmer is set to become the British Prime Minister after Labour achieved a landslide victory, securing a 170-seat majority in the House of Commons. This result has reduced the Conservative Party to its lowest number of MPs on record.
Simon Harris, the Taoiseach of Ireland, tweeted his congratulations to Starmer on the “comprehensive victory,” stating, “I look forward to working with you as close neighbours and friends. The relationship between Ireland and the UK is deep and consequential. I look forward to it going from strength to strength.”
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and deputy leader Michelle O’Neill also welcomed the election result. McDonald emphasized the opportunity for resetting Irish-British relations and honoring the Good Friday Agreement, while O’Neill highlighted the chance to address issues caused by Brexit and Tory austerity.
Both Irish leaders look forward to working with the new Labour government to improve public services and strengthen cooperation between the two nations.
