Taskforce recommends stronger Garda presence, more housing to revitalise Dublin

A taskforce set up to revitalise the city of Dublin has recommended amping up Gardai presence, upgrading CCTV network, and converting derelict sites into high-density residential units, among other key measures.

The taskforce was set up by the Taoiseach in May 2024 with an objective to develop a set of recommendations to rejuvenate the capital in the wake of 2023 riots and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Identifying safety as the key focus area to the city centre’s future, the taskforce has recommended that a minimum of 1000 additional gardai have to be deployed in Dublin on a phased basis over the next three years.

It further pointed out that Dublin falls short of the European average of police to inhabitants in the city with one police officer per 373 inhabitants compared to the EU average of one police officer per 293 inhabitants.

Other recommendations included revitalising O’Connell Street, prioritising the total regeneration of social housing complexes in the city centre and delivering more targeted and better located services for vulnerable populations in the city centre.
