Taxi fares are likely to increase in Ireland by approximately 9 per cent this year after the National Transport Authority (NTA) recommended a hike to reflect the cost of operating a cab.
The NTA has launched a public consultation on the proposal after its two-yearly review of charges in the industry. The review, which was carried out between November 2023 and March 2024, examined the impact of inflation, fuel prices, increased public transport availability, and overall economic situation.
Fares were increased by 12 per cent last time in September 2022, while nighttime rates jumped by 17 per cent to incentivise drivers to operate during a peak demand time.
According to the NTA, the results of a household survey it commissioned showed the cost of living was impacting the demand for taxis.
There are over 16,000 registered taxis operating across Ireland.
