According to new research released by Threshold, the national housing charity, and the Citizen’s Information Board found that tenancy termination is the most common issue for private renters, with vulnerable clients on fixed incomes most likely to be negatively impacted.
Rent rises were also a major concern for renters, particularly those receiving housing assistance, having children, or living on a limited income.
According to the findings, renters of all ages and backgrounds face similar challenges.
The results are based on 90,000 renter inquiries Threshold received during a two-year period.
The charity says it shows the private rental sector is putting an increasing number of tenants in a vulnerable position.
The study contains major proposals targeted at enhancing security for private sector tenants, such as establishing a constitutional right to housing and eliminating ‘no-fault’ eviction from Residential Tenancies Acts.
The government has stated that it is seeking guidance from the Attorney General on whether an eviction ban would be constitutionally permissible. It comes as the latest Department of Housing numbers reveal that the number of persons in emergency accommodation reached a record high of 10,805 in August.
