In the first nine months of 2022, there were more than 33,000 thefts in the Dublin area, a frightening 38% increase from the corresponding period the previous year.
Even though this was the most notable increase in the most recent crime data from the CSO, most other categories also saw increases when compared to 2021.
In Dublin alone, there were nearly 7,500 murder attempts, assaults, harassments, and related offences during the first nine months.
During that time, there were 21 homicides and related crimes committed in the capital.
In the nation’s capital, more than 1,000 sexual offences were reported, compared to almost 3,600 nationwide.
Almost 10,000 Irish homes were invaded by burglars, with 4,189 of those cases being in the Dublin region.
In order to help homeowners keep their homes safe during the winter, when “burglaries traditionally tend to rise,” Gardai have provided a number of crime prevention tips.
“Whether you are at home or going out, remember to turn on some lights, use timer switches, lock all doors and windows, use an alarm, store keys away from windows and letter boxes,” gardaí recommend. “And don’t keep large amounts of cash or jewellery in the house.”
The CSO report also listed a number of other offences. In Dublin, there were almost 1,200 offences involving weapons and explosives and 6,645 involving controlled substances.
The capital also saw a significant number of robberies, extortion, and hijacking cases (1,185), and Dublin garda reported 66 kidnapping and related offences.
Additionally, the capital ranked first in the nation for the most public offences (11,100), environmental and property damage (8,833), offences against the government (6,756), and fraud and deception (6,756). (5,655).
