Thunders Bakery, a well-known and beloved Dublin-based chain, has announced it will be closing all its stores after 56 years of serving the community. The bakery, which first opened its doors in Drumcondra in 1969, has cited recent financial difficulties as the reason behind the decision to cease operations. Management stated that keeping the business running is no longer sustainable after a challenging few months of trading.

The closure affects all eight of its locations across Dublin, including shops in Drumcondra, Swords, Phibsborough, Clontarf, Dundrum, Rathmines, and Crumlin. The chain, which has been a staple for freshly baked goods and celebration cakes, expressed deep gratitude to its dedicated staff, loyal customers, and supportive friends over the decades.
According to The Journal, customers who have placed pre-orders with the bakery are advised that management will be contacting them directly in the coming days to discuss outstanding orders. It remains uncertain whether some orders, particularly those placed for Mother’s Day on 30 March, will be fulfilled.
The bakery chain was acquired by entrepreneur Sinéad Heffernan in 1997, who has overseen its growth and success throughout the years. The decision to close the doors marks the end of an era for many Dublin residents who have fond memories of visiting Thunders for a special treat or cake. As the business bids farewell, it leaves behind a legacy of quality baking and community spirit.
