Gardaí investigating after discovery of body on Clare beach

A body was found on a beach in Co Clare’s southwest on Saturday afternoon, and Gardai are now investigating into the incident.

The body was discovered at White Strand beach between Doonaha and Carrigaholt on the north coast of the Shannon Estuary at around 3 o’clock by a couple out for a walk.

Volunteers from the Irish Coast Guard’s Kilkee unit were also sent to the area after the Garda were initially sent. After arriving on the location, Garda officers discovered a man’s body on the seashore near the high water mark.

The Clare Divisional Crime Spot Investigation unit was also sent to the scene, where they took photographs of the body in its environment and investigated the surrounding area.

Later, Garda and Coast Guard volunteers moved the man’s remains from the beach to an access road where they were waiting for a doctor to arrive and officially declare him dead.

The body was later removed by hearse to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Gardaí are understood to be investigating the possibility that the man may have suffered a fall.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances following the discovery of a body of a male at White Strand beach, Doonaha, Co. Clare, at approximately 3pm this afternoon.

“His body has since been removed to the morgue at University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem will take place at a later date, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.”
