Ireland hosts European school chess championships for first time in history

The European School Chess Championships will make history in June 2024 as the first European chess championships to be held in Ireland.

The tournament, which will be held at the University of Limerick from May 30 to June 8, 2024, is expected to attract between 300 and 400 young chess players from all over Europe to Limerick.

The Irish Chess Union (ICU) succeeded in a bid against four other nations to organise this important chess competition.

The Irish Chess Union (ICU), the University of Limerick, Limerick City and County Council, Failte Ireland, and the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau are all involved in organising the event.

The European School Chess Championships are expected to draw about 300 talented children from all over Europe, ranging in age from 5 to 16, together with their families, coaches, and supporters. The games will be live streamed to viewers all around the world on Twitch and other internet platforms.

This is anticipated to be a great chance for Ireland to highlight its active chess community and promote further development of the game.
