In a vote held on Women’s Day, March 8, Ireland decided against amending its constitution’s definitions of family and care. The proposed Family Amendment, aiming to broaden the family definition beyond marriage, garnered only 32.31% support, with 67.69% favoring the status quo. Similarly, the proposal to revise the constitution’s stance on care responsibilities saw 73.93% voting to maintain the current definition, contrasting with 26.07% supporting change. Despite advocacy from major political parties and arguments for equality, the majority opted to uphold traditional views on family and care roles. The voter turnout was relatively low at 44.36%, signaling mixed engagement compared to the 2018 abortion referendum, which saw a 64% participation rate.
