Irish Referendum: High Turnout as Nation Decides on Family and Care

Dublin: The Irish people eagerly await the outcome of yesterday’s referendum on family and care issues, with heavy polling in the final hours. Counting begins today at 9 am, starting with the family referendum and results expected by afternoon. The care referendum count will follow, with overall results anticipated by evening.

Despite slow initial voting, over 50% participated in some areas, although the final turnout is projected to be under 35%. With 3.5 million voters, a surge in evening polling hints at an engaged electorate. President Meehol D Higgins and Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed views at key locations.

The absence of appointed representatives disappointed the No party, while all major parties support the government referendum. Polling increased across constituencies, notably in Munster and Dublin City, while Donegal islands and parts of Cavan displayed varied turnouts. Overall, the referendum reflects a significant public voice on crucial matters.
