Limerick to Introduce Ireland’s First Fully Electric Bus Service

In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Limerick is set to become Ireland’s pioneer city with a fully electric bus service. Bus Éireann, the government-owned bus service company, unveiled plans to deploy 55 electric double-decker buses in the city.

Currently, Limerick boasts 34 electric buses, with an additional 21 scheduled to join the fleet by early 2025. The project was inaugurated by Transport Minister Eamon Ryan at Colbert Station in Limerick on Friday, marking a milestone in the country’s transition to eco-friendly public transport.

To support the electric bus initiative, 35 charging stations will be installed at the depot in Roxboro, ensuring efficient charging infrastructure for the buses. This initiative is part of the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) €54 million project aimed at promoting sustainable transportation across Ireland.

Recent statistics from the NTA reveal a steady rise in bus users in Limerick, with 4.6 million services operated by Bus Éireann in 2023, marking a 15% increase from 2022. Recognizing the importance of skilled personnel for this transition, Bus Éireann has provided 500 hours of training to drivers and mechanics in preparation for the launch of the new electric bus service.

This milestone comes after Athlone was designated Ireland’s first fully electric bus town service, commencing in January 2023. The move signifies Ireland’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing clean energy alternatives in public transportation.
