Irish Rail has announced plans to build a new train station in Cabra, north Dublin, which will provide rail connectivity to a community that has long been without direct train access despite having railway infrastructure.

The station will be located on the Phoenix Park Tunnel line and the planned DART+ South West route, serving approximately 26,000 people living within one kilometer. It will offer frequent services to Dublin city center and destinations including Cork, Limerick, and Galway via the proposed Heuston West station.
The new facility will significantly improve public transport connectivity in the area. Four bus stops will be located within 100 meters of the station entrance, with planned Dublin BusConnects routes serving the R147 Cabra Road. The station will also connect to local cycle routes along the R805 Old Cabra Road, while the Luas Green line at Phibsborough will be a 13-minute walk away.
Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien described the project as “transformational for the local community,” emphasizing its role in boosting sustainable public transport options.
Irish Rail chief Jim Meade highlighted the significance of finally connecting Cabra to the rail network, stating: “The railway line has always been part of Cabra, but yet the community has not been rail connected. This is about to change.”
The planning application process is expected to begin in early 2026.
