Sinn Féin unveils ambitious €39bn plan to tackle housing crisis

Announcing its new housing policy plan, Sinn Féin has pledged to invest up to €39 billion in social and affordable housing over five years to address Ireland’s housing crisis.

The plan, titled ‘A Home Of Your Own’, aims to deliver 300,000 homes from 2025 onwards, marking a significant shift in the country’s housing strategy. It is positioned as a radical alternative to the current government’s approach.

Central to Sinn Féin’s strategy is an average annual investment of €7.8 billion towards the construction of social and affordable homes over the five-year period.

In addition to the new builds, Sinn Féin proposes a €2 billion allocation to acquire 7,500 additional social and affordable homes. This acquisition would supplement the extensive construction efforts and further ease the pressure on the housing market.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald emphasised that housing is the party’s top priority, underscoring the importance of this new plan. She described it as a comprehensive solution for the rental sector, public housing, and the private market.
