Weekend weather to bring mild respite before stormy week ahead

Ireland can expect a relatively calm weekend with mostly dry conditions before a turbulent weather system moves in next week, Met Éireann has forecast.

Friday will start cloudy with occasional bright spells and temperatures ranging between 4C and 8C. Saturday promises more sunshine, with temperatures climbing to 10C and some scattered morning showers primarily along coastal northern and western regions.

Sunday looks set to be mild and slightly breezy, with temperatures potentially reaching 12C and predominantly cloudy skies accompanied by light drizzle.

However, the tranquil conditions will be short-lived. From Tuesday, the weather is predicted to turn “very unsettled” with persistent rain, potentially heavy in some areas, and wind speeds likely to reach gale force.

By Wednesday, heavy showers might become thundery, with cyclonic winds creating challenging conditions. Thursday is expected to bring a colder front with a mix of sunshine and potentially heavy, thundery showers that could include hail.

As for the burning question of a white Christmas, Met Éireann remains cautious. “It is still too far out to have any confidence in the forecast for Christmas Day,” a spokesperson said, noting the current outlook suggests alternating mild and chilly periods with frequent rain.
