Aer Lingus pilots set to announce pay deal decision

Decision expected today on Aer Lingus pay deal

The Irish Air Line Pilots Association (IALPA) will announce the results of a crucial pay deal ballot today, potentially ending a prolonged and bitter dispute with Aer Lingus that caused widespread travel disruption this summer.

Voting closed this morning for IALPA members, who have been deciding whether to accept a new pay offer from the airline. The decision is expected to be revealed by lunchtime.

The dispute led to a work-to-rule action starting on June 26, causing Aer Lingus to cancel numerous flights daily, affecting tens of thousands of passengers. Pilots were demanding a 24% pay increase to match inflation since their last raise in 2019. Aer Lingus initially offered 12.25%, contingent on productivity and flexibility improvements.

After failed negotiations, a Labour Court hearing in early July recommended a 17.75% pay increase through 2026, along with changes to pay scales and increased overnight allowances. Both sides accepted the Labour Court’s terms, with IALPA’s executive recommending members approve the deal, despite it falling short of their original demands.

The results of the ballot are anticipated this afternoon, potentially bringing an end to the disruption and unrest.
