Brigit festival returns ‘bigger and better’ ahead of new bank holiday

As Ireland gets ready for its first bank holiday in her honour, organisers of a festival celebrating the Celtic goddess Brigit have promised a bigger and better showcase this year.

After a successful debut last year, Brigit: Dublin City Celebrating Women is returning the next month. It will take place from February 1 through February 6 on Wednesday.

Brigit is related to creativity, wisdom, rebellion, and the traditional festival of Imbolc, which marks the arrival of spring. Since both saints are associated with St. Brigid’s Day, she shares her name with the Christian saint of the same name.

St Brigid’s Day is February 1 and a new bank holiday to mark the occasion will be celebrated this year on Monday, February 6.

The Brigit festival, organised by Dublin City Council, will honour the contributions and accomplishments of women throughout time.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy said: “I am delighted to support Brigit 2023: Dublin City Celebrating Women as it returns following the immense success of the inaugural festival in 2022.

“It is extremely important that we continue to celebrate the contributions and achievements of Irish women and acknowledge the impact they have made on our society.”
