The long-awaited children’s hospital in Dublin is nearing its final stages of completion, bringing hope and relief to Irish families. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly announced that the project, a dream cherished by the Irish people for years, is on track to be finalized this year. Set to be handed over in the last three months of 2024, the hospital is expected to start treating children from the following year.
Construction, overseen by BAM Company on the grounds of St James’s Hospital, initially estimated at 650 million euros in 2014, has faced challenges leading to increased costs. Now estimated at over 2.2 billion euros, the hospital aims to be one of the world’s best, boasting 300 patient suite rooms with accommodations for parents, 60 critical care beds, 93 day beds, and 20 dedicated mental health care beds.
With 22 operation theaters, procedure rooms, five MRI units, and 110 outpatient rooms, the hospital promises comprehensive care for children. At 90% completion, the installation of health equipment has begun, thanks in part to funding from the Ronald McDonald House charity. The impending opening marks a significant milestone in Ireland’s healthcare landscape, offering a beacon of hope for children and families in need.
