December babies will receive new €420 grant, Minister Humphreys confirms

Ireland’s Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed that parents of babies born in December will qualify for the newly announced €420 grant for newborns.

The grant, which was introduced as part of the recent Budget, will be available to all babies born from January 1, 2025. However, an exception has been made for December-born babies.

Minister Humphreys revealed that she was contacted by many expectant mothers due in December, who were concerned that their babies would miss out on the grant.

Speaking in the Dáil, Humphreys acknowledged the concerns and reassured mothers that they would not be left behind.

“They are very worried their babies will arrive too late for the Double Child Benefit Payment at the start of December but too early for the newborn grant in January

“As a mother, I do not want to see any woman miss out,” the minister said.

Aside from the ‘baby boost’ payment of €420 for each newborn child, parents are set to receive a double payment of child benefit in November and December, following the announcement of the budget 2025.
