A new climate action mandate that will be presented to Cabinet today for approval prohibits the use of disposable cups, plates, and cutlery in public sector canteens.
Eamon Ryan, the minister of climate change and the environment, will present the “Public Sector Climate Action Mandate 2023” for Cabinet approval.
The mandate highlights the primary climate action goals for public sector organisations and lists a number of steps that should be followed to contribute to Ireland’s emissions being reduced by 51% by 2030, as stated in the Climate Action Plan.
Except for local authorities, commercial semi-state bodies, and schools, it will apply to all public sector organisations subject to decarbonization objectives and be subject to yearly review by the appropriate agencies.
Disposable cups, plates, and cutlery will only be used in clinical or medical environments, such a hospital coffee shop, under the requirement.
Promotion of the use of push bikes, electric bikes, and shared mobility through safe bike parking facilities, parking for shared mobility vehicles, and charging stations are further initiatives.
Ryan and Minister of State for green procurement Ossian Smyth will launch the mandate at Tom Johnson House this afternoon.
