A Dublin student has received a bucket full of five cent coins as salary from the restaurant he was working. Rian Keogh, who is a student of University College Dublin was paid €355 in five cent coins by Alfie’s Restaurant in Dublin city centre following his resignation from the restaurant.
The student was waiting to get his final payment and he was given the amount in a big bucket and he said he actually started laughing at the moment.
As it was unable to count each coin, he weighed the bucket and found the amount was correct. One five cent coin weighs 3.92 grams and €355 means 7,100 coins which is 29.8 kilograms.
Keogh was not even able to walk properly due to the weight of the cions and said people were asking about it when he entered a bar. He also had to take Luas to his home which was of just 15-minute walking distance. The news spread after he took a video of his ‘salary’ and sent it to his friends.
He was not obliged to accept payment in that form as Alfie’s had failed to comply with the relevant legislation, employment law specialist Richard Grogan said The Journal. He also said the legislation states that no one is obliged to accept more than 50 coins denominated in any single transaction. So, the bucket of coins did not comply with the act.
Trade Unions also expressed dissatisfaction in the act of the restaurant.
The restaurant owner Niall McMahon did not make any comment when The Journal tried to contact him regarding this and said it was ‘personal matter. ‘
Anyway, Keogh later deposited the coins in a bank and waiting to get it back as currencies. He also has joined another store for part-time work.
