Electricity costs continue to put pressure on households, with new figures showing a sharp rise in the number of people behind on their energy bills.

According to data from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, 319,459 electricity customers were in arrears in December 2025.
This marks an increase of more than 20% compared to December 2024, when 264,458 customers were recorded as unable to pay their electricity bills.
The figures show that more than 50,000 additional consumers fell into arrears over the 12-month period.
The rise comes amid continued cost-of-living pressures, with energy remaining one of the most significant household expenses, particularly during winter months when usage peaks.
Consumer advocates have repeatedly warned that sustained high energy prices are pushing more families into financial difficulty. They have called for expanded supports and closer monitoring of disconnection policies to protect vulnerable customers.
Energy providers and regulators have urged customers experiencing difficulty to contact suppliers early, as payment plans and hardship supports may be available.
