Four people have been rescued from a sinking yacht off the coast of Wexford early today. The rescue operation was carried out by a four member RNLI volunteer crew, 50 miles south of Kilmore Quay around 5.30am. The operation was with the help of an all-weather Tamar class lifeboat. The Irish Coast Guard team were alerted about the situation early around 2.45am.
The yacht was travelling from Dublin to Vigo in Spain, before they decided to turn back due to difficulties. They were in the return journey as the rescue team approached. With life boat crew, Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117 joined the operation shortly after. As the yacht was sinking, the four people onboard were then transferred to the life boat and took to Kilmore Quay, the nearest port.
The yacht sank subsequently. No injuries reported.
