Gardaí launch St Patrick’s weekend crackdown on drink and drug driving

A major road safety campaign targeting drink and drug driving is underway across Ireland for the St Patrick’s Day bank holiday weekend.

Since 7am this morning, gardaí have been mounting checkpoints nationwide as part of the extensive operation to improve road safety.

So far this year, 33 people have lost their lives in road incidents—a decrease of nine compared to the same period last year.

During last year’s St Patrick’s Day period, four people lost their lives, and 30 others suffered serious injuries in road accidents.

Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority are urging the public to plan ahead and arrange a safe way home if they are out socialising over the weekend.
