Government unveils ambitious €230 million sports plan to transform Irish athletics

The Irish government has launched a game-changing sports initiative that promises to revolutionize athletics across the country. Minister Thomas Byrne unveiled the Sports Action Plan 2024-2027 today, backed by a record-breaking €230 million budget – doubling the funding from 2018 levels two years ahead of schedule.

The comprehensive plan introduces 47 new initiatives aimed at making sports more accessible to everyone in Ireland. Key highlights include specific programs for people with disabilities, efforts to close the gender gap in sports participation, and plans to strengthen local sports communities through improved facilities and volunteer support.

“We’re committed to creating a ‘Sport for All’ environment in Ireland,” said Minister Byrne, who oversees Sport, Physical Education, and the Gaeltacht. “This isn’t just about funding – it’s about transforming how we approach sports from the ground up.”

The plan specifically targets youth engagement and includes measures to enhance connections between schools and sports organizations. Local authorities will receive support to develop their own sports plans, while special attention will be given to preserving traditional Irish sports like hurling and camogie, which recently received UNESCO cultural status.

A significant focus of the initiative involves upgrading sports facilities to better accommodate women and girls, alongside the appointment of a dedicated Disability in Sport Lead by Sport Ireland to ensure inclusive access to sporting activities.

This new strategy builds on Ireland’s 2018 National Sports Policy and aims to create lasting change in Irish sports participation and excellence by 2027.
