Immigration To Ireland Surges, Pushing Population To 5.2 Million

In a remarkable demographic shift, Ireland has seen its population soar to 5.2 million, marking the highest increase in 16 years. Recent data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveals that in the year spanning April 2022 to April 2023, a staggering 141,000 individuals immigrated to the Emerald Isle in search of improved prospects. Among them, 42,000 hailed from war-torn Ukraine, seeking refuge in Ireland.

Notably, 29,600 Irish nationals decided to return home after residing abroad, contributing to the influx. Moreover, 26,100 individuals from various EU nations, 4,800 UK nationals, and 81,100 from countries outside the EU chose to make Ireland their new home.

This influx signifies the first time since April 2007 that Ireland has witnessed such substantial immigration, marking the second consecutive year with over 100,000 immigrants. Simultaneously, 64,000 Irish citizens left the country, representing a notable surge compared to previous years.

With this surge in immigration, Ireland’s total population has surged to 5.28 million, with 15.3% of its residents aged over 65. Dublin, the capital city, remains a magnet for inhabitants, with 28.4% of the population residing there, totaling 1,501,500 residents by 2023. These figures mark a significant demographic shift for the country, unmatched in over a decade.
