Ireland’s cricket all-rounder Simi Singh is battling for his life at a hospital in India after being diagnosed with acute liver failure, according to a report in The Times of India.
The 37-year-old India-born cricketer has been admitted to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon, and is reportedly awaiting a liver transplant to be performed at the facility.
According to the report, Singh’s wife, Agamdeep Kaur, who is a working professional in Dublin, has agreed to donate a part of her liver.
Singh has played 35 One-Day Internationals and 53 T20 Internationals for Ireland, bagging a total of 39 ODI wickets and 44 T20I wickets. With the bat, he scored a memorable century against South Africa in 2021, becoming the first number 8 batter to record a hundred in ODI cricket.
In 2022, he was awarded a two-year contract by Ireland but has rarely featured since. Singh was also part of 15-man squad that represented Ireland at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Born in Bathlana, Singh represented the Indian state of Punjab at the U-14 and U-17 level. However, he failed to make it into the U-19 level. Subsequently, Singh moved to Ireland in 2005 to pursue hotel management.
A year later, he joined Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin, before making his debut for Ireland in 2017.
