Ireland Extends Paid Leave for Post-Covid Symptoms in Health Workers

In Ireland, the government has prolonged the initiative to provide paid leave for public health workers grappling with post-Covid health issues. The “Special Scheme of Paid Leave,” initially launched in 2022, will now stretch for an additional three months.

Post-Covid-19 symptoms can persist long after recovery, spanning from days to months. These symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, memory loss, and sleep disturbances.

Originally set for a one-year duration, the project saw multiple extensions before concluding on March 31 last year. However, following pressure from various organizations, the scheme has been reinstated. The decision has garnered praise from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) and other groups.

This extension reflects the government’s commitment to supporting frontline workers experiencing lingering health challenges from Covid-19. It ensures that affected health workers can access essential support and time off to manage their symptoms effectively.
