Ireland Implements Winter Moratorium On Gas & Electricity Disconnections

In a bid to ensure the well-being of its citizens during the harsh winter months, Irish authorities have instituted a moratorium on disconnecting gas and electricity services in homes across the country. The move comes as part of a directive from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), aimed at safeguarding vulnerable households from the cold and ensuring access to essential utilities.

Starting from October 1 and lasting until March 31, registered households will be protected from disconnection, even if they are unable to make payments. Additionally, homes relying on electrical appliances for survival will also be exempt from disconnection.

Furthermore, CRU has mandated that no gas or electricity disconnections should occur in any household from December 1 to January 31, regardless of the reason.

It’s important to note that the disconnection restriction for regular customers will not be extended beyond January 31. Failure to settle accumulated bills may result in eventual disconnection once the moratorium is lifted.

The CRU’s winter moratorium aims to alleviate financial stress, extend payment periods, and ensure that all Irish residents can keep their homes warm and powered during the coldest months of the year.
