Ireland imposes strict traffic restrictions for New Year’s Eve celebrations

Traffic restrictions have been implemented across major Irish cities for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with An Garda Síochána and transport authorities introducing extensive measures to manage large gatherings, particularly in Dublin city centre.

Dame Street and Castle Street in Dublin have been completely closed to vehicles, with restrictions remaining in place until the early hours of January 1. The closures accommodate expected large crowds attending New Year’s Eve festivities in the capital’s centre.

Public transport services have been adjusted to facilitate safe travel for revelers. Most bus services are operating on Saturday schedules, with buses passing through the city centre being diverted around closed areas. Nitelink services will be available for late-night travelers requiring transport after standard service hours end.

Special late-night train services have been arranged to help people return home safely from New Year’s Eve events. DART and commuter trains will run extended services from 1:30 am to 3:00 am, providing crucial transport options during peak return times when celebrations conclude.

An Garda Síochána has established more than 2,100 checkpoints across Ireland as part of an intensive operation targeting drink driving and speeding. Officers have warned that violators will face stern penalties as part of the heightened enforcement effort during the holiday period.

Authorities are strongly advising those planning to attend New Year’s Eve celebrations to avoid using private vehicles and instead rely on public transport options. This recommendation aims to reduce road congestion, facilitate emergency access if needed, and most importantly, prevent drink driving incidents that typically increase during holiday celebrations. The coordinated approach between gardaí and transport providers seeks to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve for all while maintaining public safety on Ireland’s roads.
