Ireland’s Garda Force Welcomes 165 New Members, Nearing 15,000 Target

The Garda Force in Ireland welcomed 165 new members into its ranks, bringing the total strength closer to the targeted 15,000 mark. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris expressed optimism during the attestation ceremony, emphasizing the importance of reaching this milestone for effective law enforcement. The recent recruitment campaign, which saw a surge in applications after the age limit was raised to 50, contributed significantly to bolstering the force. With €2.3 billion allocated in the 2024 budget, the government demonstrates its commitment to supporting the Garda Force. However, amidst the celebration, concerns persist regarding the force’s handling of recent riots in Dublin. The addition of these new members, comprising 67% men and 33% women, marks a step forward in enhancing the Garda’s capability to serve the community. Currently, 277 individuals are undergoing training to further strengthen the force.
