Since the war in Ukraine started at the end of February, Irish efforts to gather money through the fundraising website GoFundMe for those affected by it have totaled about €5 million.
Nearly €100 million has been collected internationally for Ukraine, according to recent GoFundMe statistics.
While many of the Irish fundraising initiatives also attempted to assist Ukrainian refugees in relocating here, the monies were utilised to buy essential medical items like ambulances and ventilators.
According to the data, funds were also used to aid 120 people leaving conflict-ridden areas of Ukraine, buy medicine for 245 people, and send 21 people with severe impairments by ambulance across the Ukrainian border to Poland or Slovakia.
A portion of the funds was also utilised to construct mental health services at a cost of €25 per person, open a 24/7 hotline, and give a monthly supply of food at a cost of €30 per person.
Among the largest Irish fundraisers via GoFundMe was a group of Ukrainian doctors working in the Irish healthcare service, who have raised over €780,000.
The group said they were “overwhelmed and humbled by the support of the Irish people”, adding that the funds would make a “real difference”.
